Nafplion town

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful towns in Greece. The former capital of Greece may remind visitors of the Plaka but it's on the sea. With two mountains crowned by medieval fortresses overlooking the town and the small island fortress called the Bourtzi that once protected the harbor. Nafplion is full of restaurants, shops, cafes, beautiful old buildings, hotels of all catagories and a beach that you can walk to in ten minutes. For people who want to visit an island but don't like boats, Nafplion is a good alternative and just a 2 hour drive from Athens. It is also convenient to the important ancient sites of Myceneae, Epidavros, Nemea, Argos and Corinth

Shopping Greek Jewelry

Greeks have always been good at making jewellery, as proved by both ancient and modern history. Consider taking a walk around Voukourestiou and adjacent streets where exceptionally designed and handmade pieces can be found at such goldsmiths as Vildiridis , Bulgari . The internationally best known names are Ilias Lalaounis and Zolotas

Syntagma Square-the heart of Athens

Syntagma Square was once called "The Garden of the Muses" and is believed to be where the "Peripatetics", a group of philosophers led by Aristotle, used to wander in the grove of trees that once grew here. All roads in Athens seem to lead you to Syntagma Square - at least, the public transportation does. It's a place of high contrasts. Luxury hotels line the square, and pedestrian-friendly streets lead away from it and ultimately to the Acropolis and Parthenon itself. Every hour, there is a ceremonial transfer of power among the traditionally-garbed guards outside the Parliament Building. Only a Greek can make a pleated skirt and fluffy ball-toed shoes look both manly and rather threatening. On Sundays, the ceremony is more complex and offers a particularly good opportunity for photographs.

Traditionally Bakeries in Greece

A loaf of bread costs €0.70, and it is a Greek norm that all meals are accompanied by bread. Therefore bakeries exist in every neighborhood where bread is freshly baked each morning. If you arrive at a bakery after 11:00 AM you might not find much selection left. Traditionally bakeries sell a host of other products, ranging from freshly baked pies (cheese-pies, spinach-pies, etc.), milk products, sweets, cookies, and crackers. Budget conscious travelers take advantage of the reasonable prices of these products for their daily food.

Walking in Athens

The most significant part of the Walk, is this starting from "Akropoli" subway station and ends up at "Monastiraki" station. It's an arched walk on three pedestrian roads: "Dionussiou Areopagitou", "Apostolou Pavlou" and "Adrianou". You can use it to visit Acropolis early in the morning, passing by Dionussus Theater, Acropolis and the Agora. It ends up at Thission area which has many cafes and awesome views of Acropolis and at Monastiraki Square with its night and day vibe and many shops.

Athens outdoor cinemas

One of the most enjoyable and unique ways to spend an evening in Athens is by going to one of the outdoor cinemas like the Cine Paris in the Plaka. There are others around the city, some on rooftops and some in parks and some on valuable pieces of property in the center that make you wonder how they could hold out so long. Most of the cinemas show films in their original language which 90% of the time happens to be English. Unlike other European countries Greece does not dub foreign films into Greek. They just have Greek subtitles at the bottom of the screen. Unlike theaters in other countries Greek cimenas have a bar and sell beer, brandy, ouzo and of course snacks to go with them.

The central Athens neighborhood of Thission

One of the up and coming areas of Athens that has truly arrived also happens to be within walking distance of the Plaka . This is the area called Thission named after the ancient temple in the Agora that is actually a temple to Haephastus. Thission used to be a place where few people went, especially tourists. Except for the temple you won't even see it mentioned in the guidebooks. But it is a fun neighborhood and there are some great tavernas. To get to Thission the easiest way you would follow Dionissiou Areopagitou around the Acropolis and continue when it connects with Apostolou Pavlou street. If you are coming from the direction of Athinas street you can go to Monastiraki and walk up from the old Turkish Mosque at the square one block and take a right on Adrianou. Of course the easiest way is to take the Metro to Thission and cross back over the tracks and walk up with the Acropolis on your left when you leave the station. If you just walk straight down Ermou Street past M
