Ermou Street has long been the most fashionable shopping street in the capital, very long and starting very smartly in the heart of town leading directly off Constitution Square (Syntagma) opposite the Parliament building, and ending shabbily but fascinating somewhere out near the Ceramics Museum. Halfway along Ermou the small and wonderfully preserved Byzantine church of Kapnikareas stands, in its own tiny square. This is one of the best preserved Byzantine structures in the capital and dates from the 11th century. Ermou now enjoys the status of precinct and the fashion conscious flock there to buy or browse, shoes and jewellery, fashions and materials, all mingling together in what is now a quiet street where one may amble across from one side or another, only the occasional minibus (very convenient and cheap) to break the flow.

Greeks have always been good at making jewellery, as proved by both ancient and modern history. Consider taking a walk around Voukourestiou and adjacent streets where exceptionally designed and handmade pieces can be found at such goldsmiths as Vildiridis , Bulgari . You can find an enormous variety of books, a lot of them in english or other languages, fantastic books about art and travel, wonderful maps and more. Recommended for a break from sightseeing: browse through the fascinating collection of books and then have a cappuccino and a fresh salad (or pasta) on the top floor

From the electric train station of this name, heading west in the area that skirts the park around the Thission and Ancient Agora, at the end of the shopping street Ermou. There is the flea market where items ranging from off-brand winter jackets, to army knives, vie with old telephone cards (especially along Adrianou - which also has several rather romantic cafes and restaurants - on Sunday mornings). Many gift shops and most notably antique, junk and collectors corners of every sort. This is touristy, but it's mixed in with the sort of old shops, that are gems and one of a kind. By the way, walk just down from the station away from the flea market to Kirikou street and you'll find the busiest and most popular after-work Gyros places - if a Gyros is good anywhere, it is here!
