Why choose Athens Historical Center for your staying?

Athens Center exudes a unique charm, its lively character winning over tens of thousands of visitors every year. Street markets, vine-covered tavernas, souvenir stalls and ancient monuments all form a conglomerate with buildings old and new in the center, which one out of four Greeks call home. For tourists the greatest advantage is that most attractions are accessible on foot in the central area around the landmark Acropolis and Plaka. Walking is the best way to soak up the Athenian atmosphere.

Anafiotika-Historic Center

On the foothills of the Acropolis has the charm of a beautiful island village. It was built in the mid 19th century by the renowned builders of the Aegian island Anafi, who were invited to construct the palace o the first king of the Hellenes, Otto. They built small whitewashed houses, reproducing the architectural style of their village.

Syntagma Square-the heart of Athens

Syntagma Square was once called "The Garden of the Muses" and is believed to be where the "Peripatetics", a group of philosophers led by Aristotle, used to wander in the grove of trees that once grew here. All roads in Athens seem to lead you to Syntagma Square - at least, the public transportation does. It's a place of high contrasts. Luxury hotels line the square, and pedestrian-friendly streets lead away from it and ultimately to the Acropolis and Parthenon itself. Every hour, there is a ceremonial transfer of power among the traditionally-garbed guards outside the Parliament Building. Only a Greek can make a pleated skirt and fluffy ball-toed shoes look both manly and rather threatening. On Sundays, the ceremony is more complex and offers a particularly good opportunity for photographs.

Walking in Athens

The most significant part of the Walk, is this starting from "Akropoli" subway station and ends up at "Monastiraki" station. It's an arched walk on three pedestrian roads: "Dionussiou Areopagitou", "Apostolou Pavlou" and "Adrianou". You can use it to visit Acropolis early in the morning, passing by Dionussus Theater, Acropolis and the Agora. It ends up at Thission area which has many cafes and awesome views of Acropolis and at Monastiraki Square with its night and day vibe and many shops.

Plaka-walking in Athens old town

The oldest district of Athens, the Plaka, is characterized by monuments of all periods, which prove that this was the heart of the city from Antiquity until modern times. Several small churches, a mosque, an Ottoman bath and the first university of Greece, together with the Roman Agora, constitute its cultural mosaic. After a walk in its narrow streets, a glass of wine in one of the little taverns under the Acropolis is a must.
